The necklace part is waxed which will wear away in time. It helps lock the wooden bead that holds the pendant at the desired length- as they're adjustable in length. If the bead starts slipping as the wax wears away, you can either tie a simple overhand knot behind the bead (which comes undone remarkably easily) or re-wax your necklace with beeswax.
